Exit Windows using keyboard

You can shut down, restart or log out of Windows with just a standard keyboard; this method works on all popular versions of Windows for PCs, i.e. Windows XP, Windows 7 and the upcoming Windows 8. Although I have not tested, but I believe this method should work in Windows Vista and all members of Windows Server family of operating systems.

To do this, follow these simple steps:

  1. Activate desktop by either clicking on it or pressing Windows+D on your keyboard
  2. Press Alt+F4
  3. Choose what should Windows do: Shut down, restart, sleep, hibernate, log off or switch user

To lock Windows or switch user, you can always press Windows+L. (Desktop focusing not needed.)

On Dell laptops, you may not have direct access to function keys. In such cases, in step two, you must press Fn+Alt+F4 instead. Alternatively, direct access to function keys may be enabled. See your laptop user manual for details.
